National Poetry Win for Ivanna

A huge congratulations to Ivanna, Year 11, for winning the national No Place Like Home Art and Poetry competition, a collaboration between the Sanctuary Foundation and the British Library.

Their winning entry was recognised at a special celebration at the British Library in London. We are incredibly proud of her creativity and achievement!

The judging panel included best selling author Christina Lamb and award winning actor Sir Jonathan Pryce, and Ivanna has won the opportunity to have her work displayed at the British Library for World Refugee Week.

A special mention goes to Ms Adams at Thorpe Hall School, who has worked tirelessly as Ivanna’s mentor and English teacher to build her confidence and self belief.  Needless to say she is delighted for Ivanna, and we hope the whole school community will join us in congratulating her.
A copy of her winning poem is below:

A silent wish

Yesterday – a home full of laughter and life.

Today – I try to fit my whole life into a single suitcase.

Yesterday, it wouldn’t have fit; today, it does.

What was once a mundane chaos, is now neatly folded into perfect piles.

And in the quiet of the dark, I still see: my favourite park, the laughter.

But with the rising sun, I’m back

In the city that hums a foreign song,

While my heart still beats in a language no one knows.

A new home, new “perfect” life to grow,

But I still wish for that life I knew before.

So in the silence of my wish, I find my way,

A quiet hope that someday the past will stay,

But for now, I’ll carry it inside me,

And build a life from the ashes if what was.
