Expect More from Years 5 & 6

There is a significant ‘step up’ in Years 5 and 6 at Thorpe Hall School. As children progress to the upper-prep stages, our unique, enhanced provision is aimed at expecting, experiencing, and achieving more.

Innovative programmes, diverse clubs, specialised teaching, and dedicated support guarantee that pupils have exceptional opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills, grow in confidence and independence, and prepare for their next steps into senior school.

Expect more…

Focused Attention

Class sizes are small, with an average of 15 pupils, to ensure each child receives personal attention. Our exceptional adult-to-pupil ratio of 1:8 allows us to meet the needs and goals of pupils of all abilities. When it comes to our 11+ candidates, we offer customised 11+ tutoring and coaching, at no additional cost, to ensure those participating are  prepared for success.

Specialist Teaching

Pupils in Years 5 & 6 are taught by specialist teachers for 100% of lessons. Specialists bring experience, knowledge and passion to their subject areas and support children of all abilities, including those with a particular flair or talent in their subject.

Performing Arts

All pupils benefit from a broad and varied performing arts offering. Alongside drama, music and dance, we help pupils develop transferable skills such as public speaking, presentation and communication, which will serve them in all walks of life. Pupils have many opportunities to showcase their talents through productions, concerts, festivals, and competitions. Our provision is further enriched by the inclusion of LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Drama) sessions and private music tuition.

STEAM Skills

STEAM-based learning (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) extends way beyond traditional concepts. We aim to provide hands-on experiences and real-world applications. Pupils learn in fully-equipped labs, studios, and workshops. They are also introduced to exciting new technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and virtual reality, exploring their role in our future lives.

Sports Opportunities

Pupils have even more chances to explore new sports alongside all the traditional disciplines, as they develop their skills and learn about being part of a team. An extended PE curriculum and extensive fixtures list enhance our sport-for-all and elite sports programmes with notable individual and team successes at local, regional and national levels.

Modern Languages

The languages curriculum at THS is exceptional – with 100% of pupils in Years 5 and 6 learning all four languages offered – French, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin. Languages are taught in small groups by native-speaking specialist teachers.

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning branches out in Years 5 and 6 too, challenging pupils with new obstacles, encouraging independence, and allowing them to apply their knowledge and learn new skills in a natural environment. Our programme takes full advantage of our forest area and outdoor classroom, providing an ideal setting for exploration and discovery.

Life Skills

We prepare students for successful futures with a broad “Skills for Life” curriculum, covering practical subjects and modern topics. This could include analysing media messages and the companies responsible for them, projects on finance, management and leadership, and “real-life” skills like meal planning, budgeting and making the most of AI.
