Scholarships at Thorpe Hall School

Thorpe Hall School is keen to support academic high achievers, promising performers, talented musicians, rising sports stars and all-rounders through our Scholarship Awards.

In recognition and encouragement of pupils who show real talent and potential for excellence, we are pleased to offer academic, sports, music, performing arts and all-round scholarships for entry into Year 3 – Year 9.

Award Discounts – Awards will be given based on individual pupil ability, and THS scholarships can carry up to 50% maximum discount on fees for the most exceptionally talented students.  Other awards will range from 10% to 40% depending on potential and talents.  The scholarship will remain in place up until the end of Year 6 for those entering our Preparatory School, and the end of Year 11 for those entering our Senior school, provided that the student continues to meet all the requirements of their Scholarship award.

The Scholarship Awards Application Process

  1. Complete the relevant scholarship application form below (all candidates). Applications can be submitted at any time. Applications will be processed within two weeks from the date of submission.
  2. Qualifying applications will be contacted, and agreed assessment dates will then be made available to the applicant.
  3. External applicants are required to visit the school to take a tour prior to a scholarship assessment. Tours can be arranged by contacting our admissions team at scholarships@thorpehallschool.co.uk or calling 01702 582340.
  4. Attend a THS Scholarship Assessment on the agreed date.
  5. If you are awarded a Scholarship, you will be invited to complete the relevant admissions steps for your child’s year group of entry. This may include attending our general entrance assessments and/or taster days. Our full admissions steps can be found here

THS Academic Scholarships

We encourage children with academic flair to apply for an Academic Scholarship.

Successful academic scholars in the relevant year groups will be automatically enrolled in our Prep Plus (Year 5 & 6) and Grammar Plus (Year 7+) programmes.

It is likely that successful Prep age applicants will already be identified as academically advanced, and classed as 11+ candidates, by their current school.

Senior age applicants will be academically gifted and working at levels in the top 10% nationally for their age.  They should have the potential to achieve minimum grade 8s, with a high possibility of achieving grade 9s, across the board at GCSE. They will have to demonstrate exceptionally high outcomes in English and mathematics, and also evidence that they have academic flair and the ability to apply reason to academic problems for themselves.  They will need to have the ability to be fast tracked and extended academically.

Academic scholars of all ages are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in all academic pursuits at THS, make a positive contribution and demonstrate the THS core values.

Applicants must be in at least Year 2 to apply.  Scholarships if awarded will be for entrance into Years 3 – 9.

Academic scholars will be expected to:

  • Be committed to engaging with academic pursuits inside and outside of school (where relevant)
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic and exemplary behaviour across all areas of school life.
  • Continue to develop their abilities in other areas alongside their academic studies.
  • Work at a demanding pace in their Prep Plus / Grammar Plus lessons
  • Demonstrate an ongoing ability to work at a high level, both in school and through undertaking independent research
  • Work on content that will place them in the top 10% – 15% of students nationally.
  • Be an ambassador for THS, championing our THS core values.

Any failure to maintain expected standards and behaviours could result in the removal of the scholarship award.

Assessment

Entrance Assessments will be taken in:
• Mathematics
• English
• Reading, writing and spelling

Candidates will also undertake a verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessment.  We are looking for all-round academic excellence, flair and the ability to think independently and tackle questions with academic and creative expertise. The assessments are designed to take account of an applicant’s level at the time of the test, rather than where they would be expected to be at entry.

THS Sports Scholarships

Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to the sporting life of the School, and in particular to the major games offered.

It is likely that successful applicants will already be playing a significant part in their school sport teams and performing at club level or above. Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in all sports at THS, make a positive contribution and demonstrate the THS core values.

Applicants must be in at least Year 2 to apply.  Scholarships if awarded will be for entrance into Years 3 – 9.

Sports scholars will be expected to:

  • Be committed to engaging with sports outside of school participating in team or individual disciplines.
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic and exemplary behaviour across all areas of school life.
  • Continue to develop their already established creative ability alongside their academic studies.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing desire to perform to a high standard on the field/pitch/court/venue.
  • Be an ambassador for sport in and out of school, championing our THS core values.

Any failure to maintain expected standards and behaviours could result in the removal of the scholarship award.

Assessment

Candidates will be assessed on their:

General Athletic Ability

  • Physical and motor skills assessment – in a ball-skills games environment, assessing candidates’ sporting potential and current ability re special awareness, teamwork, comprehension of rules, and coordination – throwing/catching/passing etc.
  • Fitness assessment – for speed, strength and power- and providing a strong indication of athletic talent.

Sport-Specific Ability

  • Candidates will be asked to indicate their strengths in the THS major sports which they may be assessed in:

Football, Rugby, Cricket, Athletics, Basketball and Netball.

  • Applications from candidates who demonstrate the ability to compete in THS teams across multiple disciplines will be considered more favourably.

THS Music Scholarships

Candidates should be passionate about their music-making and committed to challenging and improving their musical understanding and skills.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate a confident and secure level of performance on at least one instrument or voice and have an understanding of Music Theory and Practice, appropriate to their specialism.

Candidates will be expected to be of a Grade 3 standard by Year 7 and Grade 4 by Year 9. This must be on their first instrument or voice. They will demonstrate a passion and commitment to music. There is no requirement to have taken the Grade 3 or 4 exam.

Candidates may demonstrate their ability across more than one genre of music making. Classical, Jazz, Pop, and Rock etc.

Successful candidates will be expected to play an active role in the Music Department and will be committed to participating in a range of musical ensembles as appropriate to their instrument or voice, performing in regular concerts and mentoring younger pupils.

Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead with regard to all music activities and events at THS and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.

Applicants must be in at least Year 2 to apply.  Scholarships if awarded will be for entrance into Years 3 – 9.

Assessment

The Music assessment includes:

  • An audition, which will require the candidate to perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice. These may be on different instruments if applicable.
  • Candidates will then be required to demonstrate ability in supporting tests. These may include:
    • Scales and arpeggios from the expected standard of grade.
    • Play / sing at sight
    • Complete ear tests (Aural)
    • Sit a theory paper
    • Improvisation as appropriate

There will also be an opportunity for candidates to talk to the Head of Music and discuss their portfolio and achievements.

THS Performing Arts Scholarships

Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to the performing arts life of the School, and in particular, to participate in school productions, showcases, and competitions.

Candidates will have significant strengths in one or more of the following disciplines: drama/acting, dance, musical theatre, public speaking. It is likely that they will be already playing a major part in their school’s performing arts and be actively involved in relevant activities outside of school. Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead with regard to all performing arts activities and events at THS and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.

Applicants must be in at least Year 2 to apply.  Scholarships if awarded will be for entrance into Years 3 – 9.

Performing Arts scholars will be expected to:

  • Be committed to engaging with Performing Arts outside of school (e,g dance/acting, drama, musical theatre classes etc.)
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic and exemplary behaviour across all areas of school life.
  • Continue to develop their already established creative ability alongside their academic studies.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing desire to perform to a high standard on stage.
  • Be an ambassador for Performing Arts in and out of school, championing our THS core values.

Any failure to maintain expected standards and behaviours could result in the removal of the scholarship award.

Assessment

All applicants will be assessed on a student by student basis. A single discipline or a combination can be assessed (Musical theatre, Dance, Drama/Acting). This will be discussed during the initial conversations. 2 weeks prior to the agreed assessment date, any information required to prepare will be provided.

THS All Rounder Scholarships

Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to various aspects of school life.

Candidates will have strengths in at least three of the following disciplines: performing arts, drama, music, academics, art, sports and leadership potential. All-Round Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in many areas of life at Thorpe Hall School and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.

Applicants must be in at least Year 2 to apply.  Scholarships if awarded will be for entrance into Years 3 – 9.

All-Round scholars will be expected to:

  • Be committed to engaging within the areas of strength.
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic and exemplary behaviour across all areas of school life.
  • Continue to develop their already established strengths alongside their academic studies.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing desire to perform at a high standard in their areas of strength.
  • Be an ambassador for THS in and out of school, championing our THS core values.

Assessment
