In recognition and encouragement of pupils who show real talent and potential for excellence, we are pleased to offer academic, sports, music, performing arts and all-round scholarships for entry into Year 3 – Year 9.
We encourage children with academic flair to apply for an Academic Scholarship.
Successful academic scholars in the relevant year groups will be automatically enrolled in our Prep Plus (Year 5 & 6) and Grammar Plus (Year 7+) programmes.
It is likely that successful Prep age applicants will already be identified as academically advanced, and classed as 11+ candidates, by their current school.
Senior age applicants will be academically gifted and working at levels in the top 10% nationally for their age. They should have the potential to achieve minimum grade 8s, with a high possibility of achieving grade 9s, across the board at GCSE. They will have to demonstrate exceptionally high outcomes in English and mathematics, and also evidence that they have academic flair and the ability to apply reason to academic problems for themselves. They will need to have the ability to be fast tracked and extended academically.
Academic scholars of all ages are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in all academic pursuits at THS, make a positive contribution and demonstrate the THS core values.

Entrance Assessments will be taken in:
• Mathematics
• English
• Reading, writing and spelling
Candidates will also undertake a verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessment. We are looking for all-round academic excellence, flair and the ability to think independently and tackle questions with academic and creative expertise. The assessments are designed to take account of an applicant’s level at the time of the test, rather than where they would be expected to be at entry.
Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to the sporting life of the School, and in particular to the major games offered.
It is likely that successful applicants will already be playing a significant part in their school sport teams and performing at club level or above. Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in all sports at THS, make a positive contribution and demonstrate the THS core values.
Sports scholars will be expected to:

Candidates will be assessed on their:
General Athletic Ability
Sport-Specific Ability
Football, Rugby, Cricket, Athletics, Basketball and Netball.
Candidates should be passionate about their music-making and committed to challenging and improving their musical understanding and skills.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate a confident and secure level of performance on at least one instrument or voice and have an understanding of Music Theory and Practice, appropriate to their specialism.
Candidates will be expected to be of a Grade 3 standard by Year 7 and Grade 4 by Year 9. This must be on their first instrument or voice. They will demonstrate a passion and commitment to music. There is no requirement to have taken the Grade 3 or 4 exam.
Candidates may demonstrate their ability across more than one genre of music making. Classical, Jazz, Pop, and Rock etc.
Successful candidates will be expected to play an active role in the Music Department and will be committed to participating in a range of musical ensembles as appropriate to their instrument or voice, performing in regular concerts and mentoring younger pupils.
Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead with regard to all music activities and events at THS and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.

Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to the performing arts life of the School, and in particular, to participate in school productions, showcases, and competitions.
Candidates will have significant strengths in one or more of the following disciplines: drama/acting, dance, musical theatre, public speaking. It is likely that they will be already playing a major part in their school’s performing arts and be actively involved in relevant activities outside of school. Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead with regard to all performing arts activities and events at THS and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.
Performing Arts scholars will be expected to:

All applicants will be assessed on a student by student basis. A single discipline or a combination can be assessed (Musical theatre, Dance, Drama/Acting). This will be discussed during the initial conversations. 2 weeks prior to the agreed assessment date, any information required to prepare will be provided.
Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to various aspects of school life.
Candidates will have strengths in at least three of the following disciplines: performing arts, drama, music, academics, art, sports and leadership potential. All-Round Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in many areas of life at Thorpe Hall School and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.
