The Best Start for your child

Lower School at Thorpe Hall School is all about providing your child the best start to their education.

Our aim is to discover, nurture and develop the individual strengths of each child, through an abundant variety of opportunities both academic and extra-curricular. Every child is given the chance to achieve, thrive and succeed.

We place great emphasis on teaching children how to learn and how to develop the skills they need to become life-long learners so that, as independent thinkers, they can always be the best they can be.

You can find out more about our broad curriculum, state-of-the-art facilities, specialist teaching provision, attainment and performance, and our enrichment programmes in the links on this page.

Below you will find a selection of videos about Lower School, as well as some snippets from our recent home learning provision throughout lockdown.

A day in the life of lockdown learning

Ever wondered what remote learning looked like in Lower School from the teacher’s perspective?
We asked Year 3 teacher Mrs Smale to take us through an average day from home during lockdown; we hope this video diary gives you an idea of how all our Lower School teachers rose to the challenge!

Lockdown Teacher Shout Out examples - Year 2

Over the course of lockdown and school closure, our teaching community worked incredibly hard to stay connected with students, outside of their daily lessons and interactions. Dozens of Thorpe Hall teachers came forward to contribute to our Teacher Shout Out series, even though it was over and above their already mammoth workloads, so that they could give public acknowledgments to students from around the school for their classes’ exemplary work, creativity and attitudes during this time. Here’s an example from our Year 2 teacher.

Learning to Love Literacy

At Thorpe Hall School, you will find a broad range of initiatives woven into the fabric of a whole-school approach to literacy. These begin in the Nursery and flow through to every year group. All have been designed to create independent readers and writers with the life-long skills needed to communicate effectively and acquire new knowledge.

Lockdown Teacher Shout Out examples - Year 5

Here’s another example from our Teacher Shout Out series, which we sent weekly throughout lockdown. This comes from Year 5, just after the guidelines allowed us to welcome children from all year groups back to school. We were so proud to be able to accommodate every single student in our Lower School who was able to return, giving them the maximum amount of time back in school before the Summer holidays without no need to stagger or reduce hours, thanks to our extensive grounds, amazing facilities and brilliant teaching staff.

Forest School at Thorpe Hall - starting from Nursery onwards

We offer Forest school sessions weekly to all children in our Nursery, and regular sessions throughout the year to every other year group throughout Lower School. These sessions take place in our very own forest area within the school grounds.
