Scholarships – Years 3 & 4

Thorpe Hall School is immensely proud of its excellent record of attainment in sports and performing arts, with notable successes both regionally and nationally in individual and team/group performances, competitions, productions, fixtures and festivals. In recognition and encouragement of pupils who show real talent and potential for excellence, we are pleased to offer sports and performing arts scholarships in our Preparatory School to pupils in Years 3 and 4 only.

Application Window – Applications are invited from current THS pupils and from external candidates at any time from September 2023 up until candidates are in Year 4. We cannot accept applications before the start of the summer term of Year 2 (for Year 3 entry) or after 1st April of Year 4 (for Year 4 entry).

Award Discounts – Awards will be given based on individual pupil ability, and THS scholarships can carry up to 50% maximum discount on fees. The scholarship will remain in place up until the end of Year 6, provided that the student meets all the requirements set out below.

The Scholarships Application Process

  1. Complete the School’s registration form (external candidates only)
  2. Complete the scholarship application form below (all candidates)
  3. Visit the School (external candidates only) to take a tour prior to a scholarship assessment. Tours can be arranged by contacting our admissions team at scholarships@thorpehallschool.co.uk or calling 01702 582340
  4. Attend a THS Scholarship Assessment. Assessment days will take place at different times of the academic year by mutual agreement.
  5. Sit the THS entrance assessment in English and mathematics.

THS Performing Arts Scholarships

Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to the performing arts life of the School, and in particular, to participate in school productions, showcases, concerts and competitions.

Candidates will have significant strengths in one or more of the following disciplines: drama, dance, music, public speaking etc. It is likely that they will be already playing a major part in their school’s performing arts and be actively involved in relevant activities outside of school. Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead with regard to all performing arts activities and events at THS and to be pupils who demonstrate the School’s core values.

Performing Arts scholars will be expected to:

  • Be committed to engaging with Performing Arts outside of school (e,g dance, drama, music classes etc.)
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic and exemplary behaviour across all areas of school life.
  • Continue to develop their already established creative ability alongside their academic studies.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing desire to perform to a high standard on stage.
  • Be an ambassador for Performing Arts in and out of school, championing our THS core values.

Any failure to maintain expected standards and behaviours could result in the removal of the scholarship award.

Assessment

Applicants will be invited for assessment. Assessment days will take place at different times of the academic year, and a mutually convenient time will be arranged as soon as possible after an application has been received.

THS Sports Scholarships

Successful applicants will be academically able and ambitious and are expected to make a significant contribution to the sporting life of the School, and in particular to the major games offered.
It is likely that successful applicants will already be playing a significant part in their school sport teams and performing at club level or above. Scholars are expected to take an active and enthusiastic lead in all sports at THS, make a positive contribution and demonstrate the THS core values.

Sports scholars will be expected to:

  • Be committed to engaging with sports outside of school participating in team or individual disciplines.
  • Maintain an excellent work ethic and exemplary behaviour across all areas of school life.
  • Continue to develop their already established creative ability alongside their academic studies.
  • Demonstrate an ongoing desire to perform to a high standard on the field/pitch/court/venue.
  • Be an ambassador for sport in and out of school, championing our THS core values.

Any failure to maintain expected standards and behaviours could result in the removal of the scholarship award.

Assessment

Applicants will be invited for assessment. Assessment days will take place at different times of the academic year, and a mutually convenient time will be arranged as soon as possible after an application has been received.

Candidates will be assessed on their:

General Athletic Ability

  • Physical and motor skills assessment – in a ball-skills games environment, assessing candidates’ sporting potential and current ability re special awareness, teamwork, comprehension of rules, and coordination – throwing/catching/passing etc.
  • Fitness assessment – for speed, strength and power- and providing a strong indication of athletic talent.

Sport-Specific Ability

  • Candidates will be asked to indicate at least two major THS sports in which they will be assessed.
  • They will be assessed in their elected sports plus a third activity chosen by THS which will be confirmed on their assessment day.
  • Applications from candidates who demonstrate the ability to compete in THS teams across multiple disciplines will be considered more favourably. However, we will consider pupils who excel in other areas as they will often have the potential to transfer skills to our major sports.
