Two ISA School of the Year Nominations for Thorpe Hall

Pupils and staff had cause for a double celebration following the Independent Schools Association’s announcement that Thorpe Hall School is a finalist in two of its most coveted annual award categories – The Junior School of the Year and the Senior School of the Year.

The Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards celebrate exemplary practice and innovation in independent education across the country. Their nominations recognise the overall breadth and quality of Thorpe Hall’s provision across all key stages of education, from its Reception Class in Lower School through to Year 11 in the Upper School.

Contributing to the school’s success in the Junior category was the accelerated progress made by children through the focus on the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and the impact that these subjects have on creative thinking, teamwork and communication. Parental engagement was also highlighted as among the school’s strengths, with a high number of parents involved in school life and regularly contributing to a broad range of enrichment activities.

In the Senior provision, Thorpe Hall demonstrated an excellent track record in helping students reach their full potential and outperform previously predicted grades. The school’s most recent ‘Value Added Score’ was 0.6, which means that, on average, for every 10 GCSEs taken, 6 were a whole grade higher than predicted in Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs). The school’s initiatives to help broaden pupils’ cultural horizons and engage all learners through high-calibre educational trips were also highlighted, with visits to the Royal Courts of Justice in London and Hollywood Studios in Los Angeles among the experiences available to senior students.

Headteacher, Andrew Hampton commented: “I am so thrilled and delighted that Thorpe Hall has been shortlisted for these major awards. It is, I think, a reflection of the imagination and innovative spirit of our amazing staff and pupils. Over the last 10 years, so many great ideas have been produced, developed and implemented, to the point at which both halves of the school are teeming with exciting and stimulating opportunities. It has been a joy and privilege to have led the school through this period of growth and see it become the sector leader in South East Essex. These awards reflect that success”.

No stranger to the ISA awards finalists’ line-up, Thorpe Hall School won the award for Pupils’ Mental Health and Wellbeing in 2019, The Early Years Excellence Award in 2017 and The Senior School Award for Excellence and Innovation in 2016.
